Starlink Launches Cellular Connectivity Service for Los Angeles Wildfire:

As wildfires continue to affect the Los Angeles area in California, T-Mobile and SpaceX have taken an important step. According to a recent announcement, emergency messaging services have been launched for T-Mobile users through Starlink's "Direct-to-Cell" (DTC) satellites, which provide direct cellular connectivity to phones.

Starlink Active in Los Angeles

In a statement from T-Mobile, it was noted that this service was activated to enable wireless emergency alerts, SMS, and messaging to 911. Additionally, SpaceX highlighted that its DTC constellation is not fully deployed yet but has been temporarily activated due to urgent need. Moreover, broadcasters have been able to conduct live broadcasts via Starlink to avoid disruptions caused by offline infrastructure in the region.

On the other hand, T-Mobile stated that its network "remains strong" and that half of the stations deactivated due to commercial power outages have been restored. The company announced that network infrastructure in affected areas such as Altadena, Duarte, Calabasas, Malibu, Fillmore, and Agoura Hills is being assessed, and portable generators will be deployed to maintain service until commercial power is restored once conditions are safe.

T-Mobile and SpaceX had previously activated this satellite messaging service during Hurricanes Milton and Helene. The Los Angeles wildfires mark the third time this technology has been used during a natural disaster. To benefit from the service, T-Mobile users need to have a supported phone. However, wireless emergency alerts and evacuation notifications sent via satellite can reach users regardless of their carrier.

Starlink's regular satellite internet service and DTC service can provide unprecedented benefits during natural disasters. While collapsing infrastructures during such events disrupt communication and hinder aid efforts, Starlink can ensure continuous connectivity. It is worth noting that Starlink is not yet actively available in Turkey, and the timeline for its launch in Turkey remains uncertain.
